July 2022

We have thoroughly enjoyed our week celebrating the Commonwealth Games here at Edward the Elder. We have learnt lots about different countries and have enjoyed taking part in the in house games at the different schools across our trust. We are so proud of our children that have represented us at these events. They have shown great sportsmanship and teamwork. It has been wonderful seeing all of the schools unite together and celebrate this special time.

Year 3 had a fantastic trip to Baggeridge Country Park. Lot’s of exploring, walking and enjoying the wildlife and views around us. We have loved bringing our learning from the classroom to the wonderful outdoors!

Year 4 had an amazing day at the zoo to consolidate their thematic learning linked to 'Under the Canopy'. The Rainforest experience gave the children a hands on experience holding and stroking a range of animals, including a snake, a millipede, a lesser tenrec and an armadillo.

Year 4 also had the opportunity to explore the zoo and find out about some other animals and the habitats they lived in that were in the zoo. There were many highlights in the day but a couple of favourite parts, for many, was listening to Cheeko, the scarlet macaw, talk and feeding the rabbits.

What a lovely, fun and educational day we all had.

Year 5 had an absolutely fantastic day travelling back in time, when we visited Blist Hill Victorian Town on Monday 13th June. The excitement started on the coach, as they enjoyed seeing all the large lorries whizzing past on the motorway. Once we arrived at Blists Hill, Year 5's excellent behaviour shone through - with children listening to instructions and ensuring a safe and fun day.
We ventured into the town and met bank clerks, chemists, and postal workers (to name but a few) who all played phenomenal Victorian roles. The children were able to understand what it would have been like in the Victorian era, including the many differences and some surprising similarities like: Heinze soups, Golden Syrup and the use of Yoyo's for entertainment. I'm sure the children will have shared their excitement during lunchtime, and having the private use of Blists Hills adventure playground! A lovely Suprise and treat for all!
We were able to make many links with our current English topic - where we are reading the book Street Child, a story about a young boy living in the Victorian era. Another treat for the children was meeting three working horses. The children were able to greet and stroke. Overall, a truly enjoyed day all round! As always, thank you for your continued support.

Children had a great day celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.
They arrived at school looking amazing wearing red, white and blue and they got straight to work colouring in their own Union Jack flag ready for the afternoon on the field singing the National Anthem and eating ice-lollies.
The rest of the day was filled with taking part in some 1950's games and writing some super acrostic Jubilee poems.
The highlight of the day had to be our very own 'Royal Variety Performance' all performers were amazing and kept the rest of the school entertained.

What a wonderful day we all had celebrating 70 years of Queen Elizabeth II.

Year 4 invited their parents and guardians in for a PE session hosted by Soccer 2000.

Great teamwork was shown by all during the various activities that took place and perseverance when things didn't go quite to plan with the archery!

We even managed to enjoy the sun while having fun learning new skills.

Thank you to everyone who managed to join us.

Years 5 and 6 took part in an assembly and workshops lead by Sea Cadets. The children learnt key vocabulary, how to tie different knots then moved onto learning about buoyancy where they had to design and create their own boat. There was a clear winner in Year 6 with 43 marbles before the boat sank!

Year 6 enjoyed their 1st of 5 sessions with British Cycling. Here they are riding their Sir Chris Hoy bikes which are all provided free of charge. Today the children focused on how to get on and off a bike safely, how to correctly fit a helmet as well as how to safely ride a bike. They particularly enjoyed showing their control when seeing who could go the slowest!

During assemblies we are once again focusing on the 5 ways to well-being. Our first focus was 'mindfulness'. Here's year 6 creating their own positive vibes posters ahead of their SATs.
This weeks focus is 'connect'.
