We use a variety of reading schemes at Edward the Elder Primary School. A reading scheme is a structured and levelled set of books written specifically to ensure that your child can take steady and progressive steps towards reading success.  At Edward the Elder we are also mindful of the need to support wider reading and reading for pleasure. Therefore we dedicate time within the timetable for regular guided reading sessions. In addition, we encourage children to read at home frequently, and provide a diary for home/school communication.

Early reading begins with a range of early picture books and pupils take home sounds books. Pupils begin guided reading in Reception when appropriate. All pupils take home books each time to develop wider reading skills.  Pupils in Y2-6 are expected to complete a journal about their books after reading them. Details of the expectations of these journals are glued into the front of the pupil books as guidance for pupils and their families. These journal activities also help to develop a wide range of reading skills. Whole Class Reading sessions are designed to enable pupils to practise written comprehension skills.

We have a school library and a Book Fair is held every term. Parents are invited to join their children to browse the books on offer and help make choices. In the Spring Term we celebrate World Book Day.

Author Visit - Rebecca Tonks

October 2021

Year 4, 5 and 6 were lucky enough to spend the day with local author and illustrator Rebecca Tonks.

The children began their day listening to the story Icky Sticky and taking part in a Q&A. Lots of sensible and inquisitive questions!

Some of our children have purchased a signed copy of Rebecca Tonk's book Icky Sticky. They can't wait to take it home and read it all over again!

March 2020

All of Team Edwards wore their pyjamas and were excited for the children to see the den they had created for World Book Day!

Children also came to school in their pj's and were able to spend time listening to and reading stories in the den - it felt like a giant sleepover!

Throughout the day children enjoyed sharing a book with their friends.

A special World Book Day Menu too!
